This is Elizabeth's son, and Bruce's brother, Dan. Thanks for the post, but I would like to make a few corrections about my mother's life story, just for the record. Elizabeth's in-laws owned a vegetarian hotel in upstate New York. Her father, who was also a vegetarian, owned a small grocery store in New Jersey which had no meat. When he lost the store in the Depression he moved with his daughters to Florida, where he got occasional odd jobs. When he got sick he sent Becky and Liz to live with Arlene's mother and aunt in New Jersey for a few years before coming back north himself. He (Isaac Tepper) lived on some years more, dying when his daughters, Becky and Elizabeth, were in their 30s.

I'm so glad to see this, four years later! It was a wonderful day, and Liz was radiant. I doubt if you remember me, but I've since married Dan, elizabeth's youngest.

I made one several years ago with the top spindle through fixed holes in the legs and the bottom one through a single slot in one leg about 8" long. The axle on the bottom spindle was an extra long bolt with a jam nut, two washers and butterfly nut on the end. The jam nut and one washer were inside the leg and the washer and butterfly nut were outside. I could then adjust the tension on the skein to any point I needed.

Finally, had a chance to read this. Love your thoughts about the shofar. Hadn't thought about the perspective of solder years later, still feeling to alarm of the shofar call. Powerful.

This whole experience of composing for the shofar and understanding its significance more and more--from so many different perspectives--has been an amaaing and on-going journey.

I found that, when listening to the concerto during the CD editing stage--many time over--I always felt cleared and renewed after the shofar passages. There is something purifying in this sound.

Looking forward to meeting you and your shofar tonight at Pucker Gallery for CD release of LIVING BREATHING EARTH from Navona Records (NV5842), featuring my Symphony No. 1 Living Breathing Earth and Tekeeyah (a call), my concerto for shofar, trombone and orchestra. Performed by the Moravian Philharmonic, Petr Vronsky conductor, and Haim Avitsur soloist on shofar and trombone.

Thanks, Dean.

Thanks Andrea! I think your carving would have come out a little different. Art and music are both very subtle, I mean very subtle differences make a big difference in how people react, and how you feel about it when you're doing it is a big part of what makes those subtle differences (and after all, that's the theme of my post.)
